When decorating a dorm room it can be hard deciding what to buy since you are starting completely from scratch. Here are some tips and store recommendations that I found to be helpful for anyone who is starting their college shopping journey, or just wants to redecorate their bedroom and doesn't know where to begin.
Ikea
Ikea is a great place to go and find small items that can help your room feel homier. I found these great posters that are super easy to hang and went great with the other decor I had already bought for my room. The pack came with four different posters and was only $6. They have some other designs available as well and are great for filling up space on all of the blank walls.
Ikea also has a large selection of fake plants. I think plants are an amazing way to make any room feel more lively and I love bringing in natural elements, even if they are fake out of convenience. I purchased a fake ivy plant for my desk which added the perfect pop of natural green I was looking for. They also have small packs of artificial plants such as the ones shown in the picture below as well as succulents which are a great addition to fill up empty space and again bring more life and nature to your space. I also purchased the string lights shown in the picture below from Ikea as well.If you are looking for affordable throw pillows I definitely recommend Ikea. They have a great selection of throw pillow covers which are great because they are easy to wash and easy to replace if you are looking for a change without spending $40 for a decorative pillow. They come in multiple sizes and are overall an amazing find. I got the feather insert and green velvet cover to add an accent color to my bed.
Five Below
I was shocked when I walked into five below and saw the selection of home decor they offered. To continue with affordable throw pillows, this is where I really was amazed to find the adorable white pillow shown in the photo on the right for only $5. I had seen so many similar-looking pillows online for anywhere between $15 and $50 so I picked one of these up right when I saw it in the store.
When I was looking around the store for some more decor I came across these small area rugs for $3 each. I thought they were cute and fit the theme I imagined for my room so I picked them up, figuring I would put them on the floor by my bed or next to my desk. I ended up using some command hooks and using them as mini tapestries on my wall above my bed. It was such a happy accident I love the way that they look and fill up my empty wall.
Thrift Stores
A great way to find small decor items for a low cost is at the thrift store. I went to a local thrift store that has a large home selection and was able to find a few pieces I really liked. I found two brown mugs and a handmade ceramic bowl that I used in my bedroom to store small items such as pens and hair ties. The other amazing thing about shopping second hand, other than the price, is that the items you find are more unique and it is like a treasure hunt looking for the perfect thing to add finishing touches to your space. If there are not many thrift shops in your area or you feel uncomfortable buying pre-loved items a good alternative are stores like Marshalls, T.J. Maxx, and Home Goods because they have discounted items that are unique to the location.
